Martyn Dean was singled out by the organisers of the All Britain All Breeds Show as the young person who did the most for others at the show, I can vouch for his worthiness for this award as when my truck had broken down on route, I called out EGCS President John Berry to take the trailer on whilst I waited for roadside assistance and repair. Once I got to the showground ,Martyn had offered to unload the calves, the calves had been stalled and bedded down, water butts had been filled. The next morning although I was in the sheds by 5 am , Martyn had mucked out and re-bedded the calves. On show day when the expected leaders had not turned up it was Martyn who found the replacements and who led one himself even though his own calf had yet to be shown.
He was placed as Reserve Champion Handler within the breed, largely because he is able to relax a calf, while at the same time presenting a calf to good effect a difficult skill to master.
Martyn is a credit to his parents and to his big sisters and came to Stoneleigh , just a few days after the triumph for the family at the Dairy Show and when I asked as to how and when their Champion cow had been purchased insisted that it was sister Steph who had spotted a calf with potential not him.
