Back in July, Future Golden Breeders coordinators, Tracy Marshall and Louise Carpenter organised a Training Day at Fairfield Farm in Denbury, Devon. Eleven youngsters attended and thoroughly enjoyed a clipping demonstration by Molly Westwood, who explained the finer details of top lining. The young breeders were then able to practise on some calves that Chris and Louise Carpenter had supplied. After Lunch, sponsored by Cogent and EGCS and including Louise’s Auntie Moos Ice Cream, the children enjoyed a handling demonstration by James Warren and Molly, and then split into 2 groups dictated by age for an informal competition, both of which were won by youngsters from the Ayrshire Society, obviously those showing Guernsey calves will take revenge next year. All the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and all went home with smiling faces. A huge thank you to Molly and James for their help. This was Tracy and Louise’s first venture at a Training Day, they would be the first to admit they are continually learning. They intend to repeat the event next year when there will be several workshops in progress as the children are a variety of ages and are at different stages of expertise. Again the day will be open to all breeds and they hope that even more children will come along for a fun day. Future Golden Breeders have just launched a new Facebook Page where you can contact Tracy and Louise – they would love to hear from you.
