Very sad to have to report to our members that Chris Watson passed away last evening. He had fought courageously against illness for some months and had been in hospital last week but he died peacefully at home.
Lt Col Chris Watson has been an integral part of The English Guernsey Cattle Society for many years. A long serving member of Council, Chris was Chairman of Council for many, many years and latterly was taking an active part in the workings of Council as a Vice President. He enjoyed showing Guernseys very successfully throughout his membership and was a Judge until very recently. His name is identified with the Guernsey breed throughout the world, he regularly attended World Conferences, served on several committees related to the breeding of cattle and was instrumental in creating and encouraging the use of the Guernsey Type index, GMI, Guernsey Merit Index. He was always a character within the Breed, often outspoken but always passionate about the cows that he loved.
Our thoughts go out to Belinda, Rob, Ruth and the grandchildren at this very sad time for them all.
When Chris realised how seriously ill he was last October he spent a few weeks with his younger brother, John, who travelled over from North America, effectively writing the story of his life. The Watson family have made this mini biography available to the Society. If you would like to read this fascinating memoir, the word document is available to members and friends of Chris Watson upon request to the EGCS Office.
