This years Royal Norfolk show was held on July 1-2 at Norwich.  Four exhibitors, Nigel and Anne Kennard, Suffolk Farmhouse Cheese, Ron Smith and Ken Prestige had 16 cattle forward.

The weather was sultry and the exhibitors should be congratulated on their stamina. I was very pleased to be able to judge at the show after missing out last year through back problems. It is also great to be able to write a report through the eyes of the judge at last!!

My first class were four in calf heifers. This was won by the Kennards with Instead Beauty 35, by Royal Delta. She was the best in calf heifer I have seen in the show ring this year. A wonderfully balanced heifer with great strength and exceptional udder development.

Second place was Sharnford Violet from Jason and Katherine Salisbury, by Instead Oberon. She was a lovely Dairy heifer with plenty of promise for the future. Third was Instead Ophelia 9 also by Royal Delta. She was an upstanding animal but was not as correct over the rump as my previous two. In fourth place was Instead Beauty 37, another Delta, who was more traditional than the others in the class.

The cow in calf class had 2 entries. This was won by Instead Clarissa 2nd, by Old Homestead Dividend, who had the advantage over Ron Smith's Bickfield Dot 64 (S.P. Talisman) in her Dairy Strength and locomotion.

Two in milk heifers were topped by Instead Beauty 36 again by Royal Delta. She was very freshly calved and this gave her the advantage over Ron Smith's Wayford Dianthus, by Easby Alacrity, who was very correct but a little stale.

Three junior cows saw the Kennard's Instead Beauty 28, by C.C. Enhancer Storm take first place. She was a lovely bodied cow who had the advantage in stature over the second placed cow, Bentley Highness Kirsty, and third placed Wayford Pride 2 by Montrose 7 , both exhibited by Ron Smith.

The Senior cow class was won by Sharnford Marigold, by Mr Luck shown by Jason Salisbury. She was a lovely Dairy cow with a super top line and good legs and feet. Calving in June, she was the best uddered cow on the day which pushed another very nice Mr Luck daughter, Clay Hill Tina 2 into second place. Exhibited by Ken Prestige, this cow was well framed but had been in milk since last year. Third was Thornton Topaz by Brymor Stingboy from Ron Smith who was a little too fresh and carried nature in her udder.

I had no hesitation in placing Sharnford Marigold Champion Guernsey, repeating her success from last year. Reserve Champion went to Instead Beauty 28 and Hon. Mention to Instead Beauty 35.

Thankyou to all the exhibitors and helpers for turning out their cows in the hot weather and for their hospitality to Neil and myself for what was an enjoyable two days.
