This year's South West Dairy Show at Shepton Mallet saw 10 exhibitors showing 29 adult cattle and 9 calves. Champion animal was Mayne Aaron Sylvia by Sniders Option Aaron owned by Cathryn Mills and Richard Norman. (Bred by J. D Anderson)

Champion - Mayne Aaron Sylvia

Ten exhibitors with 29 cattle and 9 calves took part in this years show. The quality of cattle on show was excellent particularly a large class of 12 in-milk heifers. Judge Andrew Hope from Cheshire commented that he "hadn’t seen a finer class of heifers in the show ring before."

The Tuesday evening before the show saw our young handlers taking part in their classes. In class 38, Showmanship Any Other Dairy Breed aged 13 years and under, the Guernseys were well represented in a class of 10 leaders by Jo and Elissa Langley, Jenny and Chloe Paull, and Bethan Senior.  Bethan Senior was third and Jenny Paull was a creditable fourth in this class and all girls did well against strong opposition.

Our two leading seniors, Emma Greenslade and Laura Sales represented the breed in the class for 17 to 18 years of age with Emma coming top and Laura in third place.

Emma was judged Champion Handler against all breeds and goes to show that our Future Golden Breeders are making their mark in inter breed competitions. Well done to Emma once again and congratulations to all our young handlers for an excellent show season.

Wednesday morning dawned and the first class of the day was Guernsey Cow in Calf due to calve before 14th Feb 2009.

In first place was Laity Farm Primrose 97 by Mr Luxury owned by the Warrens.  A wonderful strong upstanding, cow who dominated the class by her ring presence. 2nd was Jon White’s Kingwell Magic Sedge by Stoxworthy Magicman's Fancy, and third was Hampton Lily 509 from first time exhibitors at the show, The Dean Family who also had a Jersey and a Brown Swiss entered.  Fourth was Bickfield Suprema 55 from the Durbins and 5th Greylands Huggette 16 from Colin Parfitt.

Dry Cow Class

There were 5 pairs by the same sire forward. This was won by the Yogi Bear's from the Warrens. Second was the Hawk duo from Bickfield who had won at the Bath and west in June and 3rd were Colin Parfitts Holiday pair. Fourth were two more Yogi Bears from Olive Farm and fifth a Stella's Ivan twosome from Bickfield.

Pairs Class

The Guernsey Heifer in Milk class turned out to be the spectacle of the day with 12 heifers on parade.  And what a site they were.  Judge Andrew Hope certainly had his work cut sorting the order out.  After some deliberation top spot finally went to Tredinney Yogi’s Gabrielle 2 from the Warrens, who had also won at The Royal Cornwall earlier on in the season.  Second was White Ladies Ruby 93 by Mr Luck, owned by Howard Guinness.  She had also been successful at The Royal Norfolk by winning the in-milk heifer class there.  Third was Tredinney Yogi's Primrose also from the Warrens and fourth was Bickfield Golden Arza 6 also by Yogi Bear whose daughters occupied 3 out of the 4 top placings.  Fifth was Instead Oberon daughter from another new exhibitor to the show, Dow and Madgewick, Froxfield Milly.  Sixth place went to J'Taime Madeline from Mills and Norman and 7th was Greensfield Oldenburg Noble from the Greenslades.

Magnificent Line-up of In-Milk Heifers

The Junior Cow class of second calvers, was won by Mills and Norman’s Mayne Aaron Sylvia by Sniders Option Aaron. She is following in her mother's footsteps as Luckley Sylvia 15, owned by Ian Crouch, has had an excellent career in the show ring, being Breed Champion at the Bath & West in 2007. Second and third in this class were the Hawks from Bickfield, Olivia 26 and Valerie 20 respectively.  Fourth was Greylands Meadowsweet 60 from Colin Parfitt and 5th stood Greensfield Mozart Tetley. 6th was White Ladies Pretty 91 owned by Olive Farms.

Junior Cow Line Up

Intermediate cow class was won by the Greenslades with Greensfield Oaks Lady by S.P Royal Oak, Bickfield Jonquil 4th by Stella's Ivan stood second and 3rd was White Ladies Gillian 71 by C.C. Smokey Garwood.

Intermediate Cow Class

Senior cow class was won by the formidable Laity Farm Primrose 96, who needs no introduction to regular readers.  Second was herd mate, Tredinney Yette's Anne 7 and third was a Slindon Posie's Ambionic, Bickfield Elizabeth 10 from the Durbins.

Senior Cow Class

The Championship class provided an interesting climax to the day.  Judge, Andrew Hope, kept us all guessing right to the end before he tapped out this champion Mayne Aaron Sylvia, followed by reserve Laity Farm Primrose 96. Hon Mention went to Greensfield Oaks Lady.

Well done to Cathryn Mills and Richard Norman on their first Guernsey Breed Championship. Also to all the other exhibitors and handlers for making sure we had a wonderful show of Guernseys once again.

In the calf classes the Guernseys were well represented. In the Any other breed calf born after 01.10.07, Tredinney Prince Lillian 8 led by Bethan Senior was 3rd, Bourton Dairymaid 22 led by Laura Sales was 4th and Hurdlebrook Mary Jane led by Chloe Paull was 6th.

The Any Other Dairy Breed born 01.04.07 to 30.09.07 was won by Greensfield Icey Phyliss led by Emma Greenslade. Second was her herd mate, Greensfield Icey Lady led by Stuart Persey. Hurdlebrook Smokey 29 led by Jenny Paull stood fifth and Kenvin Lorens Susan led by Laura Sales was 7th. Also in this class were Calves led by the Langley sisters and calves from Sir Howard Guinness. This was a large class of fifteen entries so well done to all who took part.

Greensfield Calves Top Class

I would also like to thank Tony Mallett and Colin Gleed, our stewards, for keeping everything running smoothly.
