On Sunday 21st September, the Devon branch of the South West Guernsey Cattle Breeders Association held their Stockjudging Competition at Meadwell Farm, Lifton Nr Launceston by kind invitation of Philip and Caroline Cox. Around 16 People attended. The afternoon started with a stroll around the Bourton Herd. The sun was warm and bright, complimenting the beauty of this wonderful herd.

We then made our way to the yard for the stock judging. James Warren of the Tredinney Herd, Penzance, Cornwall was our judge and he gave exellent reasons for his placings and also explained the point margins he gave between each cow.

Class one was a group of Dry cows and James placed a Slindon Posies Amionic daughter in first, a Silverado in 2nd, 3rd was a Tredinney Royal Highness and in 4th a Rozelyn Patmar Jay Glacier.

Next came a class of In Milk Heifers. This was a super group of freshly calved heifers, all having calved in the last 8 weeks. James went with a Glacier Holiday as his first placing commenting on her openess of rib and angularity, second was a Kenvin Primulas Iceking Daughter with a Treloweth Harebells Hunter 2 in 3rd and another Holiday in 4th, 5th a Silverado and 6th by Iceking.

The last class of the day was a class of In milk Cows, a few were more senior cows proving they have been bred to last with lasting udders. James Placed a Daughter of Lancewood Focus, a bull Philip and Caroline bought from the Lancewood Dispersal sale a few years ago, he has proved a great success with many good daughters in their herd. 2nd went to a White Ladies Prettys Talisman Daughter, 3rd was a Glacier and 4th went to a Tredinneys lorrys Hero.

We then had a look around the yearling and younger stock that were housed in a new youngstock building built when they moved to Meadwell.

Then we tucked into a lovely Tea provided by Caroline and then Graham Macks-Martin Anounced the winners.

1st Emma Greenslade
Joint 2nd Shelley Warren and Duncan Vincent
4th Rosemary Charman

An enjoyable afternoon was had by all and on behalf of all who attended a big thankyou to Philip, Caroline, Joe and Chris for allowing us to have a look at their impressive herd, to James Warren for acting as Master Judge and to Garham Facks-Martin for working out the scores.
